NC Scholar Sponsors Mobile Mammography Screenings in Harnett County

Debra Harris-Hawkins
Debra Harris-Hawkins, MHA, Mammography Outreach Program

Lillington, NC – Debra Harris-Hawkins, MHA, a 2006-07 Southeast Public Health Leadership Institute (SEPHLI) scholar, led a mobile mammography screening community outreach event for underserved and rural populations in Harnett County, NC on September 13, 2007.  This screening event is the product of a unique initiative called The Mammography Outreach Program, or MOP.  MOP is designed to educate women about the importance of early detection through both education and mammography screenings, and is the result of Debra’s SEPHLI leadership project (a self-directed initiative directed at providing scholars with an avenue for applying leadership skills learned and impacting their communities in a positive way).  MOP facilitates an innovative partnership between the Harnett County Department of Public Health, Harnett County Human Resources, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Western Medical Group, and Rex Healthcare’s Mobile Mammography.
