Meet the 2011 Scholars

Latonya Brown Derrick, MS
South Carolina
LaTonya Brown Derrick earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Columbia College (Columbia, SC) in 1996 and a Master of Science degree in Biology from Georgia Southern University in 1998. She began her career with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) in 1999 as a hazardous and infectious waste enforcement project manager after seven (7) years of employment with Bank of America. Currently, LaTonya manages the Hazardous Waste Enforcement, Data Management and Planning Section in the Bureau of Land and Waste Management.
Among other committees, LaTonya is a member of the SCDHEC Strategic Plan Council, the Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials' Hazardous Waste Operations Task Force, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Change Management Group for Compliance/Monitoring/Enforcement activities. She has supplemented her educational background and leadership skills by completing the Associate Public Manager (2002) and Public Professional Development (2006) Certificate Programs offered by the South Carolina Budget and Control Board. She is currently enrolled in the nationally recognized Certified Public Manager Program and is scheduled to graduate in May 2011. And lastly, LaTonya continues her doctoral studies in Public Policy and Administration specializing in Law.
LaTonya is married to Maurice Derrick and is the proud mother of two daughters, Marissa Elaine and Madison Lowren.
