Meet the 2011 Scholars

Janet Alexander, MSPH, BS
North Carolina

Janet Alexander is an epidemiologist with the North Carolina Communicable Disease Branch. Since 2009, she has been responsible for managing HIV and STD testing data for the HIV and STD Prevention Program.  In addition she oversees the rapid HIV testing program which brings testing to communities and to clinical settings throughout North Carolina.

Her career in public health began in 1991, and since then she has had positions in federal, state and local public health settings.  She has a B.S. degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Davis.  During her final year of college she began working with the Chronic Disease Control and Prevention Branch for the state of California. She moved to North Carolina in 1992 to study epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned her graduate degree.  Following graduate school, she has served as an epidemiologist for the North Carolina Institute for Public Health and for a regional network of local health departments in Northeastern North Carolina.

She is married and has a 3 year old son.  She met her husband while sailing on the Pamlico Sound.
