Meet the 2010 Scholars

Jean WorkmanJean Workman, BS

Jean Workman is a Community Health Educator with the Guilford County Department of Public Health where she implements teen pregnancy prevention initiatives. Serving 16 years in adolescent sexuality health, she co-wrote the Guilford County Department of Public Health's Smart Girls Life Skills Training teen pregnancy prevention curriculum currently marketed across the United States. This award winning, evidence based initiative is facilitated to middle and high school students in Guilford County. Jean leads, with her team members the curriculum and overall program development inclusive of evaluation, marketing and training components securing copyright and trademark for marketing purposes.
Jean received her BS degree in public health education at UNC Greensboro and will receive her MA degree in Nonprofit Management from High Point University in May of 2010. She serves as the Vice President of the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina's board of directors and as a trainer for the NC Comprehensive School Health Training Center.

Jean is quite passionate about public health and adolescent health issues. She is a strong advocate for evidence based sexuality education and is proud of the 2009 Healthy Youth Act that will ensure all NC youth receive medically accurate, evidence based sexuality education. She serves on the statewide planning committee hosted by the Department of Public Instruction to ensure all counties are prepared to implement the new law.

Prior to working at the Guilford County Department of Public Health, Jean served as Program Director of education at a local AIDS service organization, Triad Health Project. She resides in Greensboro with her husband and two beautiful young children.
