Meet the 2010 Scholars

Madge Cohen, MA, MBA
Operations Manager

Madge is currently in her tenth year in Public Health. For the past two years, she’s been learning all the ins and outs of the mouth, gateway to the body, in her role as the Operations Manager for the North Carolina Oral Health Section. She oversees the budget, the warehouse, purchasing, as well as all contracts and grants in this section,

Prior to this, Madge served as a Contracts Manager for NC DPH. There, she designed the Contracts Unit website and was responsible for guiding the development of the grants and contracts written for the Administrative, Local and Community Support area, the Office Minority Health and Health Disparities Office, the Oral Health Section, and the Chronic Disease and Disabilities Section.

Madge had also worked as the NC Adolescent Health Care Manager. She oversaw the procurement, implementation and management of a state-wide data collection software program for the program and developed a reporting system for the collecting and tracking all contract expenditures (that she eventually adapted for all of NC DPH). She was a member of a team responsible for the development of a network of school-based/school-centered Adolescent Care Centers throughout North Carolina.

Before coming to Public Health, Madge worked as a medical contracts and grants specialist; a Grants Manager in NC Emergency Management (from Hurricane Fran through Hurricane Floyd); Clinical Research Coordinator for a medical technology firm; a hospital administrator; and Program Coordinator/Quality Assurance Evaluator for an HMO.

Madge has her MA in Medical Anthropology from Syracuse University and her MBA in Health Care Administration from Baruch College/Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. She has an abiding interest in alternative medicine, health care delivery systems, and the environment. Madge is married and the proud mother of three children.
