Meet the 2008 Scholars

Layton Long

Layton Long, MSA, RS
Health Director
Davidson County Health Department

 

Layton currently serves as health director for the Davidson County Health Department, located in the piedmont area of North Carolina, and has served in this capacity since 2004. 

He started his public health career as an environmental health specialist in 1988 with the Union County Health Department after leaving the Air Force.  In 1993 he accepted the position of environmental health supervisor in Transylvania County and served in this capacity for 8 years until leaving in 2001 to assume the role of environmental health director for Buncombe County located in Asheville.

Layton has remained actively involved with environmental health issues over the years serving as past president of the North Carolina Environmental Health Supervisors Association in addition to participation on numerous environmental health committees.  He has received appointments from the Governor to the State Board of Sanitarian Examiners and the Commission for Children with Special Health Needs.  Locally he serves on several boards including Juvenile Crime Prevention Council as chair, Davidson Health Alliance, Davidson County Partnership for Children, and Davidson County Day Reporting. He is a Registered Sanitarian and holds a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University. 

Layton is a life long resident of North Carolina is married with two children.
