Robert J. Howard (Bob) is President and Chief Executive
Officer of Robert J. Howard & Associates in
Duluth, Georgia. His company specializes in education, crisis
communication, medical and governmental relations and health
and security issues.
For twenty years, Bob served in the United States Navy with
global deployments in, Iceland, Puerto Rico, Sicily, Japan,
the Middle East and Europe. He was awarded Commendation Medals
from the Navy, Air Force and Army, as well as the Meritorious
Service Medal. During his last tour as Deputy Public Affairs
Officer for the Commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific he trained
senior officers on media management in crisis and wartime
scenarios
Bob served at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
for eleven years where he served as media/press officer for
the National Center for Infectious Diseases. Bob brings a
wide range of experience developing and delivering effective
messages on topics ranging from emerging infections,
bioterrorism, crisis communications and security plans and solutions. He
developed the Advanced Media Training Program for physicians
at the CDC and also assisted, at the request of the President’s
Physician, in the training of the White House Medical Unit. Bob’s
theories and proven strategies for managing “breaking” or
developing news stories and institutional health issues,
can easily be applied in helping any agency or entity achieve
its communication goals and outcomes.
Bob has co-authored a chapter in the public health textbook Principles
and Practices of Public Health Surveillance, and has
authored numerous book and magazine chapters and articles
on subjects ranging from bioterrorism awareness, to the
impact of illegal immigration on public health. He has
also taught at the World Health Organization and the Pan
American Health Organization. Additionally, he served as
Co-Chair of the 2002 Harvard Bio-Security Conference.
Bob serves as a visiting lecturer at the University of Georgia,
Harvard University School of Public Health and Medicine,
Harvard Principals Seminar, the National Bioterrorism Training
Center, four National Public Health Training Institutes and
is a member of the National Advisory Council at Annenberg
Center for Health and Science Center. Bob served as
the former President of the Dekalb Georgia Chapter of The
American Cancer Society.
