Phone: 212-222-7841 D. Vincent T. Covello is a nationally and internationally recognized
expert in risk communications: the art and science of communicating
effectively in high concern/ low trust situations. He is currently
serving as Director of the Center for Risk Communication in
New York City.
Over the past twenty-fi9ve years, Dr. Covello has had numerous
positions in academia and government, including Associate
Professor of Environmental Sciences and Clinical Medicine
at Columbia University. Prior to his joining the faculty at
Columbia, Dr. Covello was a senior scientist at the White
House Council on Environmental Quality in Washington, D.C.,
a Study Director at the National Research Council/National
Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., Director of the Risk
Assessment Program at the National Science Foundation, and
a professor at Brown University.
Dr. Covello received his doctorate from Columbia University
and his BA, with honors and MA from Cambridge University in
England. He is on the editorial board of several journals
and is the Past President of the Society for Risk Analysis,
a professional association with over 2,500 members.
Dr. Covello has authored or edited over 25 books and over
75 published articles on environmental risk assessment, management,
and communication. Among his books are Risk Assessment
Methods; Approaches for Assessing Health and Environmental
Risks (Plenum Publishing Corporation, 1993) and Effective
Risk Communication: The Role and Responsibility of Governmental
and Non-governmental Organizations (Plenum Publishing
Corporation, 1989). Dr. Covello has also chaired over 30 national
and international conferences on risk assessment and communication.
In addition, he has directed workshops and seminars on risk
assessment and risk communication for over 100 Fortune 500
companies and over 50 government agencies in the United States
and abroad.
