1997-2007 SEPHLI Evaluation | Year 10 Scholars Final Program Evaluation

January 8, 2009

I do not have to tell any of you that we find ourselves in a new economic environment for 2009.  At all levels of government we are challenged with devising new ways of thinking about how to function with fewer resources.  I ask you to think critically with me as we review information from a recent evaluation of the Southeast Public Health Leadership Institute.

  • Where can we make program changes that maximize effectiveness of the curriculum and purpose of SEPHLI while not losing what successes have evolved over the past 11 years?
  • How do we do things differently and remain meaningful to our scholars, their organizations, and communities?
  • What does public health need of its leaders in 2009 and beyond?

In order to continuously improve the quality of our program and remain responsive to public health professional needs, we have collected feedback from scholars and stakeholders.  I am eager to share with you a newly released comprehensive evaluation report of SEPHLI prepared by Dr. Karl Umble and Ms. Chloe Katz.  With their hard work and the participation of many of you, we have created a report that reflects on the first decade of this successful leadership program in public health. View the full report.

Now is not the time to tell our public health professionals that their leadership and skill development is not worth investing in. Rather, it is time to make certain we provide opportunities to have another decade of unprecedented progress and success with confident, effective, and well developed leaders at the helm.

As Dr. Lou Rowitz shared in his graduation address for SEPHLI scholars in December, “Leadership is not only about creating a vision, it is about improving the quality of life of all those with whom we work and serve.”

Thank you for all you do to support SEPHLI.

Yours in public health service,

Lisa
